Fast food is a part of everyday American life. We don’t think much about it, we pull in, grab whatever and eat and drink it.
I’m not mentioning names, but here are 10 fast-food facts that are genuinely unsettling—but not exaggerated:
- Some fast-food meals can contain an entire day’s worth of sodium in one sitting, especially when you add fries and sauces.
- Fried foods can contain acrylamide, a chemical that forms when starchy foods are cooked at high temperatures.
- Processed meats such as bacon, sausage, and some hot dogs are classified as carcinogenic to humans by the World Health Organization’s cancer research agency.
- A large combo meal can easily exceed 1,000 calories, making it surprisingly easy to consume a huge amount of energy without feeling like you ate that much.
- Sugary drinks can add hundreds of calories to a meal without providing much satiety.
- Restaurant portions have historically grown substantially, meaning a “normal” fast-food serving today can be much larger than older serving sizes.
- Chicken nuggets aren’t necessarily made from whole pieces of chicken. Some are made from finely processed chicken meat combined with other ingredients.
- Fast food can be surprisingly high in saturated fat, which is one reason dietary guidelines recommend limiting it.
- Fries can become much more calorie-dense when toppings are added—cheese, bacon, sauces, and gravy can transform a side dish into a substantial meal.
- The biggest problem usually isn’t one burger or one order of fries. Regularly eating highly processed, calorie-dense foods while consuming too little fiber, fruit, vegetables, and whole grains is what can contribute to long-term health problems.
