10 things a cruise ship crew notices about you

Cruise ship crew members see thousands of passengers every year. While you’re busy finding the buffet, grabbing a drink, or heading to the pool, the crew is quietly picking up on little things about you—often within minutes.

  1. Whether You’re a First-Time Cruiser
First-timers often have a certain look: checking signs, studying the ship map, asking where everything is, and trying to figure out which direction is forward. Experienced cruisers tend to move around the ship with much more confidence.
  2. How You Treat the Crew
A simple “please,” “thank you,” and friendly greeting gets noticed. Crew members interact with hundreds of guests a day, so passengers who treat them with genuine respect can stand out.
  3. How Much You’re Drinking
Bartenders and servers may quickly become familiar with regular customers and their favorite drinks. More importantly, cruise staff are trained to pay attention when alcohol consumption may become a safety issue.

  4. Whether You’re a Big Tipper
Crew members certainly notice generous guests, but they can also remember passengers who are simply friendly and appreciative. You don’t necessarily have to throw around large tips to make a positive impression.
  5. Whether You Follow the Rules
Ignoring restricted areas, saving pool chairs for hours, smoking where you shouldn’t, or disregarding safety instructions can quickly attract attention—and not the good kind.

  6. Your Daily Routine
Think nobody notices that you get coffee at 7:05 every morning? Your regular server probably does. After several days, crew members may recognize your dining time, favorite bar, preferred drink, and usual breakfast order.
  7. Whether You’re a Complainer
There’s a difference between reporting a legitimate problem and complaining about everything. Crew members quickly learn which guests have a genuine concern and which seem impossible to please.
  8. How You Treat Your Cabin
Your stateroom attendant sees a side of your vacation almost nobody else does. They know whether you’re reasonably tidy, leave towels everywhere, accumulate piles of dishes, or somehow turn a small cabin into a disaster zone overnight.
  9. Whether You’re Having a Great Time
Enthusiasm is surprisingly noticeable. Guests who laugh, participate in activities, chat with crew members, and genuinely enjoy themselves can become familiar faces around the ship.
  10. Whether You Appreciate What the Crew Does
Cruise employees often work long contracts away from home while taking care of thousands of vacationers. A passenger who learns someone’s name, asks where they’re from, says thank you, or compliments good service can be memorable.

One More Thing the Crew Probably Knows…

They may remember you better than you remember them.

On a week-long cruise, you might interact with dozens of employees. But your bartender, waiter, cabin attendant, or favorite coffee-shop server may see you every single day. By the end of the cruise, don’t be surprised when they know your name, your drink, your routine—and possibly what you’re about to order before you say a word.

Till next time . . .
