10 things to do when arriving at a new destination

Arriving at a new destination is exciting when traveling. Make your trip the best.

Here’s a checklist of 10 things to do when you get there to make sure you get the most out of your experience:

1. Get Your Bearings

  • Explore the local map or use a navigation app to get a sense of the area. Identify key landmarks, your accommodation, and nearby attractions.

2. Check Into Your Accommodations

  • If you’re staying at a hotel, hostel, or Airbnb, drop off your bags and get settled. Make sure to ask the staff for any local tips, or advice on transportation and food.

3. Learn the Local Currency & Exchange Rates

  • If you’re in a foreign country, get familiar with the local currency. Make sure you know where you can exchange money, or whether you can use cards easily.

4. Get Local SIM or Wi-Fi

  • Get a local SIM card for better data rates, or check if your accommodation offers Wi-Fi. Having access to Google Maps and communication is crucial for exploring.

5. Observe Local Customs and Etiquette

  • Spend a little time researching local etiquette, greetings, and cultural customs. This can help you avoid awkward situations and interact with locals more smoothly.

6. Sample Local Food or Drink

  • Whether you grab a quick bite at a local café or go to a restaurant, sampling the local food should be a priority. Ask locals for recommendations—they often know the best hidden gems.

7. Take a Walk Around the Neighborhood

  • Sometimes the best way to get to know a new place is by walking. Explore the streets, take in the architecture, and notice the small details like street art or local shops.

8. Get to Know the Transportation System

  • Find out how to get around—whether it’s by bus, subway, taxi, or bike. Getting a transport map or downloading an app for ridesharing (like Uber or Lyft) is often a good start.

9. Check Out Nearby Attractions or Activities

  • Research a few attractions or activities near you. Even if you’re not planning to visit them immediately, knowing what’s close by will help with planning future days.

10. Take Photos and Journal

  • Document the moment! Take some photos and notes about your first impressions and experiences. It’ll make for great memories later on.
