With Summer around the corner, one of the biggest pests of summer is on the horizon – mosquitoes! We had some standing water here recently, and one of my neighbors was freaking out over it – that’s a breeding ground for the bugs.
Here are 10 plants that naturally repel mosquitoes, thanks to the oils and scents they produce:
🌿 1. Citronella (Cymbopogon nardus)
- Effectiveness: One of the most well-known mosquito repellents.
- How it works: Its strong lemon-like scent masks mosquito attractants.
- Tip: Grow in pots or garden borders; needs warm climates.
🌿 2. Lavender (Lavandula spp.)
- Effectiveness: Repels mosquitoes, moths, and flies.
- How it works: The strong floral fragrance and natural linalool compound deter bugs.
- Tip: Dried lavender sachets also help indoors.
🌿 3. Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)
- Effectiveness: Contains citronellal and other compounds mosquitoes dislike.
- How it works: Its lemony scent repels mosquitoes.
- Tip: Grows easily but can spread aggressively.
🌿 4. Basil (Ocimum basilicum)
- Effectiveness: Especially effective against mosquito larvae.
- How it works: The oils in basil disrupt mosquito sensory receptors.
- Tip: Best when fresh and crushed; use near doorways.
🌿 5. Marigold (Tagetes spp.)
